Artist Statement
Photography, as I would suggest any other art form is poetry; it is language. To speak of one’s words and choices of syntax, is very difficult. How often does the creator of his own work stop to observe, analyze, dissect and discuss his own work from the inside in? All queries are legitimate from the mind of the viewer, but where lie the answers? All I can suggest is possibilities, options, and let the observer decide for himself.
The images in this selection represent a continued search for the amazing depth of the world’s landscapes, here of course the great American West. It is a place of peace, reconciliation, communion and ultimately confession as the traveler will find him or herself faced with the most profound need for humility as he or she faces the universal and imposing size of a realm we are only given for the flash of a lifetime. I hope viewers can share in the awe I experience every time I am fortunate enough to be completely alone in front of massive cliffs or at the bottom of apparently bottomless abysses.

Artist Statement
In the African American community, we are slowly rediscovering our history that has not been fully illustrated. It’s my job as visual communicator to review historical information and inform the community by bringing these concepts to life and help visually define our identity. And to distribute these stories about the strengths and trials of the African American community.
I want to illustrate the life-cycle of the inner life of a black person. From innocent to informed. From recklessly defiant to determined. How the weight of American history can either crush you or harden you. And, how either result often has to be hidden from view just to get through the day. The anger of the African-American community is often portrayed as a threat. The anger of “traditional’ communities is depicted as righteous. This paradigm feeds stress and despair back into black lives and thus stokes the fires we try to simultaneously hide and harness.
Currently, there is a newly intensified wave of empathetic consciousness in all forms of artistic output. I want the community to seize this moment in history to create work that tells a story and compels them to seek out empathy and activism for the sake of others. My hope is the work I’m creating can help do that. I want to spark conversations that have, historically, been hard to start.

Clashing Squirrel would have loved to be a flying squirrel, but had to find another way to go about in this harsh world. As squirrels cannot digest cellulose, she had to find a better use for all the abandoned books and magazines she came across. Everything changed when she discovered scissors and stopped using her teeth. The realm of possibilities was infinite.
